South Island Get Together
Dunedin
7th & 8th August

22 racers participated in the South Island Get Together held at the Pitlane SCC rooms (Dunedin), 8 from Christchurch, Bob from Invercargill along with Keith Kennedy who had to leave early and 13 from the host club.

Since the meeting was intended as a chance to meet and introduce the newer drivers to interclub racing the more casual Pitlane clubnight race method was used. This method is designed to have drivers race against most of the others, it also has drivers coming in and out so that each driver has races throughout the series. At the end of the series each driver will have run each lane, points are awarded 5, 3, 2,1 for a win etc. (This race method is discussed on the Pitlane site, click here and then press the Back arrow to return)

As the results were not the important we will discuss them here only in general terms. (They can viewed on the Pitlane site, click here and then press the Back arrow to return)

The first series saw most racers using International 32s (using either the NZSCA class 3 tagged armatures or standard 16D armatures). The odd ones out were Ryan and Shane using Falcon powered Int32s. These proved to be fast with Ryan taking out the series. (See article below which first appeared on the Pitlane site)

A series for Group 12/15 cars and the local Super 16D powered sports cars saw Barry  Toomey take on the locals.  Bob Henderson who really qualifies as a local, visiting once a month, ran his Super 16D powered clubsports. Luke Dougherty was the fastest of the club cars. It was good to see Steve Wilson, Brent Dougherty and Garry Marr running Group12/15s for the first time in interclub competition.

The series for those not running Group12s had Kevin Horne and Rhys Dougherty the only locals. A clear win for John Hawkins from the Christchurch club.

Unfortunately other commitments meant Barry, John and Scott missed the handicap series. Handicaps were allocated based on the times recorded in the first series. In some cases over 45 seconds for a 20 lap race expected to take 110 to 120 seconds to complete. Good to see Bob and Lex Omand taking it to the locals.

Lots of talk as the new drivers met those from the other clubs and the old hands renewed acquaintances.

Other features of the weekend were the Falcon powered cars and the number of different controllers that are appearing.
