HMMRC 2005 12 Hour Enduro

Four teams line up for the start of our 12 hour endurance race at 9.00am on Saturday 13th August, after a 10 lap shoot out to give teams lane choice, James out qualified Kieran to take number one spot for Team Johnston followed by the Straight Liners then the all Junior Team.

Team Johnston managed by James lined up on blue lane with their car built and prepared by Paul (Split) Heath, Team Dale lined up on yellow with their car built by Rob Dale, the Straight Liners, all racers from the drag racing side of the club lined up on red lane with a car built and prepared by Dave West and managed by Ray Smith, the fourth team made up of Juniors under the guidance of Maurice Brown.

Right from the green light Team Dale lead finishing some 427 laps ahead of Team Johnston, but it was not that easy, in the first hour Team Dale only managed to put 15 laps between them and the Johnston Team, the second hour only added one more lap, then Kieran came to life and was put behind the controller for longer stints to try and open out a lead.

But as you can see by the result sheet at the start of the ninth hour only 112 laps separated Team Dale and Johnston, then misfortune hit the three man Johnston Team, breaking the side out of the guide in a crash, after replacing the guide the car still would not run, with the discussion to replace motor and lead wires it lost them a further 265 laps which they where unable to make up.

At 6.00pm Team Dales two top drives Kieran and David Wigg (out of retirement just for this race) had to leave, this then brought in the teams part time racer and car builder Rob Dale with Chris and Shaun to hold out the Johnston Team.

The Straight Liners did well considering most of them race cars in a straight line, Dave West and his son Chris being the big movers in their team, but Dave had other commitments and could only race in the morning.

The all Junior Team did extremely well under the watchfully eye of the experienced Maurice Brown, when you look at the time that these lads have been racing, probably no more than 2 year and one or two less than 6 months it was a great effort.

Car problems, only Team Johnston had to change a motor, the Juniors broke an axle and damaged a gear in a crash, the straight Liners had no major problems, Team Dale only changed tyres and braids, this year the cars where better prepared than passed years.

Team Dale reports that after the race Rob pulled down the motor for inspection, the motor was in good condition considering the 12 hour sprint race it had just completed, average lap times over the 12 hours was 5.84 seconds and the car was still capable of lapping in 4.8 sec laps at the end, fastest times at the start where in the low 4.7 sec, with the pace of the race the team expected to change the motor at the 9 hour mark due to brush wear but on inspection the brushes probably had another hour our two left.

It was a top event and the end result was a lot closer than it has been in passed years, thanks to all the competitors  for a great enjoyable days racing, hope the club will run another next year.
